Being a Pedestrian Tourist

With many of us travelling around NSW during the summer holiday period, it’s been interesting to observe different pedestrian infrastructure and signage.

On a recent trip to Kiama, I noticed a number of signs emphasising vehicular priority which surprised me as it seemed like perfect locations for zebra crossings to provide priority for pedestrians.

However, on lengthy observation, it appeared that this crossing configuration worked like a zebra crossing anyway, with most cars giving way to pedestrians waiting to cross.

Perhaps the street narrowing and the paving as visual cues are enough to communicate pedestrian priority and guide human behaviour.

Have you been travelling recently and noticed interesting and/or different treatments for pedestrians?  Let us know in the comments!
