Channelization of pedestrians at Broadway

Before

Before: a cavalcade of bikes and pedestrians overwhelm the pedestrian island at Broadway and City Road.
This calls for construction. Let’s make it better!

During

Construction is painful, it reduces the amount of space given to pedestrians.

After

Now, isn’t that pretty. No, not more space for people, not less space for cars, but small green plants to prevent pedestrians on the island from being hit by wayward motor vehicles. At least it will absorb some excess carbon.
Such protection they provide. And look, they might channelize pedestrians, making them behave better for the benefit of cars. But let’s not change anything about the auto environment, including the obviously unused striped area that would be perfect for a neckdown.
Or here, no need to widen the pedestrian island, or crosswalk, or give pedestrians more time to cross.
